About this quotation
This is the last line of “Ulysses”, a dramatic monologue in which the aged Greek hero refuses to settle down in Ithaca and decides to sail on. Tennyson wrote it in 1833 after the sudden death of his close friend Arthur Hallam, and it is often engraved on memorials and school mottos.
