About this quotation

The poem is usually read as praise of independence. Earlier in the same poem, however, the speaker says that the two paths were “really about the same”, and that he will be telling the story “with a sigh” long afterwards. Many readers take it as a gentle joke about how people explain their choices in hindsight.
