Where both deliberate, the love is slight: / Who ever loved, that loved not at first sight?
Marlowe left Hero and Leander unfinished when he died in 1593, and it was printed in 1598. Shakespeare quotes the second line in As You Like It, calling Marlowe the “dead shepherd”.
Come live with me and be my love, / And we will all the pleasures prove.
Was this the face that launched a thousand ships, / And burnt the topless towers of Ilium?
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell, / Awake for ever in a sweet unrest.
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings / That then I scorn to change my state with kings.
Had we never lov’d sae kindly, / Had we never lov’d sae blindly, / Never met—or never parted, / We had ne’er been broken-hearted.
